How to use/interpret references

It would be amazing to see and learn how other artists break down their reference photos to use for their design or realism drawings. I am pretty good at basic sketching, but struggle with form. I usually have to go on procreate to make a stencil and print and trace that before I can do my realism stuff, but when I'm just using reference for rough things like poses or character study, I can eyeball it because it doesn't have to be exact.
I feel it would be beneficial to have a break down of their process.
